Many years ago I was whisked off to Rome by Myriam one day. We arrived in the afternoon
at Dr. Tosti's apartment not just for a cup of tea but to stay, for several days. I was rather
apprehensive, but at supper that evening Dr. Tosti told me how much he liked and was amused
by P.G. Wodehouse and Rudyard Kipling. Since then I have spent many happy times in his
company and I would like to thank him for making me feel so welcome.
Below is just the first and last few lines of the poem "If" by RK which Dr. Tosti Quoted that day,
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!"
